A language model is a very good guesser of the next word. That is less impressive than the marketing and more useful than the backlash — because an enormous amount of business work is, structurally, guessing the next word: the reply, the summary, the draft, the routine answer.
It earns its keep where the work is repetitive, text-shaped and low-stakes per instance, and where a person still sees the result before it matters. It quietly costs you money where the work needs a guaranteed correct answer, a calculation, or accountability a system cannot carry.
The practical test before automating anything: what happens when it is wrong? If a person notices and fixes it in ten seconds, automate. If you lose a customer or send the wrong money, use AI for the draft and keep the decision with a person.
Which task is the better candidate for AI drafting?
An agent is not a smarter chat window. It is a piece of software with a job, a set of tools, and — the part people forget — a clear list of things it must not do on its own.
The agents that work in businesses tend to share three traits. They answer from material you control rather than the open internet. They know how to say "I don't know" and hand over. And they draft rather than decide anything with money, legal or safety attached.
Start narrow. One job, done reliably, beats an assistant that can nearly do everything.
What should an agent do when it is unsure?
Strip away the vocabulary and digital utility is a loyalty balance with better plumbing. Someone does something you value, a rule credits their balance, and that balance opens doors inside your world.
Two things make it different from points on a card. The balance can move to a wallet the holder controls, which makes it genuinely theirs. And the same utility can work across several products, communities and partners rather than being locked to one till.
The failure mode is always the same: something that can be earned but not spent. Design the spending first. If you cannot name three things a member would use it on, you are not ready.
